OPENING
The meeting started quite late by 14.45 due to the fact
that we could not see the manager who makes arrangement for chairs for us to
sit, hence Maikudi led us in opening prayer while Tope Soladoye read the
minutes of our last minutes. After reading the minutes Henry called our
attention to the fact that in the area titled other issues, Dapo Daramola was
actually the one who spoke on Masai Ujiri’s
visit. After the adoption, Lateef Suberu called for the adoption which was
seconded by Azeez Momodu.
APOLOGY
Bukonla and Bola Olanrewaju sent in their apology for
not being able to attend the meeting. We take apology from Kudi though she
called in that she is on her way but maybe due to the rain and hold up she did
not meet us before we dispersed.
LOGO
The issue of logo of the Alumni was brought up and Dapo
Daramola showed the House the copy of the logo. We looked at it and various
comments were made, Henry suggested that the logo does not have ABU anywhere
on, that since ABU is not the only university having a secondary school named
Demonstration, hence there is a need to signify on our logo which
Demonstration’s Logo it is. Adesina also commented that since our uniform is is
navy blue, the logo should be navy blue in colour but this was countered that
green is the colour of ABU and so we cannot do what is different from our
parent (ABU). Dapo said in branding there is uniformity which we need to adhere
to, base on this we rested the case on that.
WELFARE
On the issue of welfare being included in the
constitution, Bar. Azeez suggested that when writing our constitution, it will
not be appropriate to include a fix amount to be given to members who are celebrating or
being bereave because if we do, if need be in the future, if we do anything
otherwise, it will be against our constitution and this will make us be
changing or adjusting the constitution all the time seeking CAC stamp, this
will be cumbersome and expensive. His suggestion is that we could have an in
house committee which will be saddled with the responsibility to decide what
should be given to anybody as at when due, he further suggested that the
committee might be on yearly basis or reconstituted every year. Dapo further
reminded the house that in our previous meeting we’ve agreed to a token meeting
levy of one thousand naira. On this Adesina further enumerated that the one
thousand is being levied because as it is now, we do not have an annual due to
run the affairs of the Alumni we need to start somewhere and that this token
for now is not by compulsion, for those in the meeting who don’t have up to one
thousand naira, it is not a barrier for attending and also if any one has more
than one thousand naira no problem.
2013
ACTIVITIES
For this year we are trying to draw up programs for that
we have a general direction of where we are going. Segun Daramola encouraged
the house to bring up ideas as per what we could include in the yearly activities.
Already included in this year’s activity is the presentation of scholarship to
the best graduating student in JSS 3 and SS2. This will be awarded on the
school’s speech and prize giving day. We are still open to suggestions.
Suggestion was made by Adesina that we should find out the school fees and date
of the speech and prize giving day.
OTHER ISSUES
A letter of appreciation was sent by a member of the
house and was read by Adesina showing his appreciation to the
house for the financial assistance given him last December. Segun enumerated
further on the importance of being a member and also inviting other Demosaites
that we know, as we have many things to gain.
Adesina spoke on his efforts too especially now as it
concern this Abuja chapter, that he will going to Abuja next month and will be
attending their meeting if they agree to have it when he is available and with
a couple of old school mates who had promised him to be there.
Segun further said when one is coming down this
association stands to lift the person up till one becomes balance again, that
one will value # 5000.00 when one is in dire need than one million naira when
one is comfortable.
The newest comer in the house Abdullahi Maikudi was
given the floor to address us. He said he was happy to be part of this meeting
as he had never witnessed an organized one like this before. He promised to
always be in attendance and specifically thanked Adesina and Lateef for
inviting him. He also said should there be a financial need in the house he
should be carried along to contribute his own quota.
Tope spoke on her efforts in trying to convince her
cousin to attend but did promise not to relent. Adesina gave words of
exhortation as the meeting was being rounded up. There was a run down of
pictures of our previous activities so that those who were actually coming for
the first time can see.

Of the money generated-N7,500, N5,000 was handed over to
John Ojuola to help present to Mr. Abdulateef who gave birth to a baby boy

Olanrewaju’s account for the monthly running of the office while the remaining
balance of N500 has been paid into Kudi’s account being the treasurer.

OPENING
The meeting started at 2.50 with opening prayers said by
Dapo Segun Daramola. The minutes of January meeting was read by Adesina
Ogunyebi. Dapo Daramola moved for adoption of the minutes while Adesina
Ogunyebi in the absence of any correction seconded.
APOLOGY
Abdullahi Mustapha Maikudi, Ivaa de-Odigie and Henry
Gaji sent in their apology for not being able to be present at the meeting.
LOGO
Comments on the DEMOSA logo on Facebook were analyzed by
the House. The embryo-like logo was voted for most but not without comments
especially on the colour used – Green. Dapo Daramola gave explanation on some
of the issues raised concerning the logo. We are an Alumni now and we need something different from
D.S.S. logo because we are no more students but grown-ups. The Ahmadu Bello
University (A.B.U.) symbol on the logo is used only by A.B.U. and A.B.U. is an
institution situated in Zaria, therefore it will be repetition writing A.B.U on
the logo. On the issue of colour, the green will be removed and replaced with
the colour of our uniform- Navy blue. Abdulazeez Momodu asked how soon this can
be done. Dapo Daramola responded soonest. Bola Olanrewaju added that it will be
posted again after the change of colour is effected for people’s comment.
LEGAL
Barrister in the House, Abdulazeez Momodu, advised that
as we grow we register the Logo as our Trade Mark with the Ministry of Commerce.
John Ojuola said its better to register it now as its new and our concept so we won’t have to pay huge sum to buy it at
a future date. Bola Olanrewaju too agreed we register both the Alumni and logo
together. Approximately the sum of Two Hundred Thousand (N200,000:00)Naira only is agreed to be voted for both. Since DEMOSA
is international, there is need to involve every demosaite about the
registration by reaching out to them.
WELFARE
The House has agreed that no mention of names of any
member that the Alumni render assistance to be mentioned in the minutes of
meetings. The Committee concerned should take care of that. This is to protect
the member’s integrity and dignity. It should just be written as donation or
assistance rendered to assist a member in need. Also the amount should be
discrete.
REPORT
ON ABUJA MEETING
Adesina Ogunyebi was in Abuja in February and attended
meeting with DEMOSA Abuja chapter. Another Demosaite came in from Lokoja to
attend too. In attendance were fourteen (14) members. Adesina Ogunyebi got in
contact with most of the members present at the meeting. Three (3)major issues
were deliberated upon including the challenges they face as a chapter. On
constitution sent to them, the barrister in the House ( DEMOSA Abuja) promise
to go thru the constitution, add or remove if necessary and promise to send it
back to us in Lagos before the next meeting in March for all modification
before registration take place.
DEMOSA Abuja mentioned that they will design the Logo of
the Alumni and send to DEMOSA Lagos. The idea was welcome as we all need to
work together to get things done.
Adesina Ogunyebi, advised they take a clue from what
DEMOSA Lagos does. Communication should be effective, members should be made to
participate by getting involved fully and given assignments pending when
officials will be elected and finances should not be left for a single person,
they should all contribute financially to keep the meeting going. Reminders of
meetings dates should be communicated at intervals.
He also informed them of DEMOSA Lagos plan to visit
D.S.S. Zaria this year during their Speech and Prize Giving Day but Adesina
Ogunyebi was told that it does not hold any longer, that the school has lost
its glory of yester-years e.g having over 50 students in a class. He informed
them that even if there is no Speech and Prize Giving Day, there must be best
students in each year group. Some members of Abuja chapter suggested we build
classroom for the school, Adesina Ogunyebi reminded them that they have to be
consistent in attending meetings regularly to be able to achieve all we need to
do for the school. Bola Olanrewaju asked if there is Parents Teachers Association
(PTA) of the school in place.
RESPONSE
FROM DEMOSA LAGOS
DEMOSA Lagos have passion and commitment, we will await
the Constitution sent to Zaria, Abuja and Canada till the month of April. If there
is no response, DEMOSA Lagos will proceed with the programmes as we have
scheduled. DEMOSA is a legal entity we won’t allow anything to delay or drag us
back.
D.S.S is among the top schools in Zaria Kaduna State.
D.S.S is owned by A.B.U and she has her own Governing Council, as DEMOSA is a
legal entity, we can dialogue with the authorities concern and effect changes
in the school. If any member has the opportunity of visit Zaria, a visit should
be paid to the school to get necessary information on the present situation,
takes pictures and get pictures from the archives showing the good old days of
D.S.S. we need to make comparism and call out for help for the school. We need
to reactivate those activities that give the school glory like the Speech and
Prize Giving Day and other extra-curricular activities of the school.
YEARLY
DUES
Our financial year begins April and ends March every
year. After careful deliberations, the amount of Twenty Thousand (N20,000)
Naira ONLY was agreed upon for now as the yearly dues payable either at once,
twice or thrice. It must surely be paid by the end of the first third month of
the financial year. If anyone joins 6months after the beginning of the
financial year he or she is entitled to pay Ten Thousand (N10,000) Naira Only.
Bola Olanrewaju and John Ojuola agreed that we continue with our monthly due as
we have being doing. John Ojuola asked what are the things we would use the
funds for. Dapo Daramola responded that we need money for precautionary and
speculative purposes to enable us move the alumni forward. Things such as:
1.
The need to print forms and stickers to
generate funds
2.
The need for membership cards
3.
The need to get a better place for our
meeting and pay for the venue
4.
Organize dinner
5.
Organize seminar / training
6.
Welfare in general , etc.
OTHER
ISSUES
Bola Olanrewaju informed the House about the take off of
DEMOSA Zaria. Michael Akuboh called her to inform her of their first meeting.
Bola Olanrewaju told them to forward details of their meeting such as the venue
and time when the meeting will be holding so as to communicate it by putting up
a post for demosaites around Zaria and environs to be aware and attend. As we
have demosaites in Kastina who are asking for such information.
The House concluded that since there is no Speech and
Prize giving Day in D.S.S for now our planned programme of going to give
Carrier Counseling talk to the students will not hold for now instead DEMOSA
representatives will be in the school on the last day of their third term to do
the presentation to the students. The details of the school fees is yet not
known.
At exactly 4.30 Bola Olanrewaju moved a motion for adjournment which was
seconded by Dapo Daramola.
Next meeting scheduled for 24th of March 2013
instead of 31st of March reason being that 31st of March
is Easter Sunday.
Closing prayer was said by Kudi Olobayo.
